On February 28, 2026, the Islamic Republic of Iran was subjected to a brutal attack by the United States and Israel in flagrant violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4, of the Charter of the United Nations. This unlawful, illegitimate, and inhumane act has resulted in the killing or wounding of thousands of innocent Iranian civilians and the widespread destruction of or extensive damage to numerous civilian infrastructures.
Furthermore, the aggressors' indiscriminate bombings in the vicinity of historical monuments have led to the destruction or serious damage of more than 60 cultural and historical sites across various provinces of Iran, four of which are registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, symbolizing the shared heritage of humanity. This occurred despite the prior installation of the Blue Shield on these sites—a sign affixed to cultural landmarks during armed conflict under the 1954 Hague Convention to ensure their protection. Under international law, the intentional destruction or damage of historical monuments constitutes a war crime, and its perpetrators are liable for prosecution and punishment.
Several of the most valuable heritage sites damaged in this aggression are located in the beautiful city of Isfahan, including the Chehel Sotun Palace-Museum, Ali Qapu Palace, Timurid Hall, Rakib Khaneh Mansion, and the exquisite Ashraf Hall. The images below illustrate some of the damage inflicted upon these precious historical landmarks.
