Isfahan: A WHO Age-Friendly City

Saturday, 02 August 2025

The Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC) was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010 to connect cities, communities, and organizations worldwide under the shared vision of becoming exemplary places for aging populations. In response to global population aging and rapid urbanization, this network focuses on local-level actions that:

  • foster full social participation of older adults

  • promote active and healthy aging

The GNAFCC aims to inspire and empower cities globally to become age-friendly by:

  1. driving transformative change by demonstrating best practices

  2. facilitating knowledge exchange among members

  3. supporting evidence-based, innovative solutions

The network focuses on policies, programs, and infrastructure to enhance seniors’ quality of life. Key domains include:

1. Outdoor Spaces & Buildings

  • Pedestrian-friendly pathways

  • Accessible parks and safe public buildings

2. Transportation

  • Affordable, safe, and senior-accessible public transit

3. Housing

  • Supportive, affordable housing options

4. Social Participation

  • Activities to prevent isolation

5. Respect & Social Inclusion

  • Intergenerational programs and anti-ageism initiatives

6. Civic Participation & Employment

  • Opportunities for seniors in decision-making and workforce engagement

7. Communication & Information

  • Senior-friendly access to digital services

8. Community & Health Services

  • Tailored healthcare and social support systems

Isfahan’s Membership in GNAFCC

In 2021, Isfahan joined the GNAFCC for its optimized urban infrastructure and high-quality living standards for seniors. It is one of only two Iranian cities in the network (alongside Tehran).
