The State of Kuwait, within its social and cultural context, has a diverse range of handicrafts that include weaving (such as Sadu) as well as metalwork and more modern decorative arts.
Although the most well-known Kuwaiti handicrafts are mainly in the field of Sadu weaving (braided patterns and textile ornamentation) and metalwork involving silver and copper objects, the abundance of mineral materials in the Persian Gulf region also supports the use of stone and metal for decorative items—evidence of the artistic variety present in Kuwaiti craftsmanship.
Such gifts—like a stone ashtray adorned with metal inlay—can represent a combination of local or imported stone plus metal decoration, a form that carries symbolic meaning in the tradition of official and diplomatic gift-giving across the Gulf region: durability, authenticity, weight (in the symbolic sense), and the connection between cultures.
